Blu-ray + DVD combo packs

From CCS Cataloging Manual

The following guidelines apply to publisher sets containing both a Blu-ray version and a DVD version of the same videorecording.

Handling combo packs

If your library acquires a Blu-ray + DVD or DVD + Blu-ray combo pack and then circulates the DVD separately from the Blu-ray (or does not circulate one or the other at all), then catalog each piece on its own record, creating them in WorldCat if necessary. Do not catalog both formats on a single set record, and do not use existing set records for these items. Include a 500 note to the effect of, "Originally issued as part of a combo pack."

If a matching standalone version has already been cataloged in CCS on its own, then use the note, "Some copies also issued as part of a combo pack with UPC: 9876543210.", and qualify any 028 fields that are specifically for the combo set with "|q(combo pack)". If the version from the combo pack is cataloged first and then a matching standalone version is received, amend the note in the existing record from "Originally issued..." to "Some copies also issued..." and amend any 028 fields to add the qualifier.

If your library acquires a Blu-ray + DVD or DVD + Blu-ray combo pack and then circulates the Blu-ray and DVD together as a set, then catalog the combo as a set on a single record, even if other CCS libraries have cataloged the individual pieces separately. If it is not obvious which format is primary, then select whichever format is mentioned first on the packaging as the primary format; if it still is not obvious, then select Blu-ray as the primary format.

If a title is cataloged in CCS both as a Blu-ray + DVD combo and as a Blu-ray alone, add "[Blu-ray + DVD combo pack]" to the edition statement of the set record. If a title is cataloged in CCS both as a DVD + Blu-ray combo and as a DVD alone, add "[DVD + Blu-ray combo pack]" to the edition statement of the set record.

When a combo pack is split up and circulated separately, any separate "digital copy" discs should be included on the Blu-ray record for circulation purposes, unless your library does not circulate Blu-ray discs, in which case they should be included on the DVD record. (Since these discs are useless to more than the first patron, such "digital copy" discs should not be circulated separately.)

This will result in many movies being represented by at least three records in catalog (more if there are multiple versions, such as with and without special features, 3D vs. 2D, etc.), but the respective catalog records should make the reasons for having multiple records very clear to both patrons and staff:

  • Blu-ray only (whether issued that way or whether issued as a combo pack and split up)
  • DVD only (whether issued that way or whether issued as a combo pack and split up)
  • Blu-ray + DVD set (when the Blu-ray is the primary format, or when in doubt about which is primary)
  • DVD + Blu-ray set (when the DVD is the primary format)

This is a special exception based on the precedent for the way books, audio CDs, and book + CD kits are currently handled, due to the same content being included in one package in multiple, incompatible formats that some libraries circulate together and some libraries split up, and should not itself be considered to be a precedent for any other multi-part cataloging situation.

Retrospective cataloging of existing records cataloged according to previous combo pack guidelines will be done by all CCS libraries as new copies affecting existing records are received.

Cataloging combo packs as sets

007
Be sure to include an 007 for each format

007 vd cvaizq
Publisher number (028)
Add a qualifier of "(set)" in ‡q to a publisher number for the combo pack as a whole. Use qualifiers of "(Blu-ray)" and "(DVD)" for publisher numbers that apply just to one format or the other.

Edition (250)
If a title issued in a combo pack has also been issued or cataloged separately, add a bracketed edition statement describing the combo pack, in order to make it less likely that OCLC will mistakenly merge a record for a combo pack onto a record for just one format or the other.
List the primary format first.

Physical description (300)
When cataloging in WorldCat, prefer "2 videodiscs" over "1 Blu-ray ... +‡e1 DVD" so that OCLC will be less likely to mistakenly merge a record for a combo pack onto a record for just one format or the other.
When cataloging in CCS, prefer "1 Blu-ray ... +‡e1 DVD" over "2 videodiscs" so that it is obvious which disc formats (and how many of each) make up the set.
When cataloging a DVD-primary combo pack, prefer "1 DVD ... +‡e1 Blu-ray" instead.
Content, Media, Carrier, Sound characteristics, Projection characteristics, Digital characteristics (336, 337, 338, 344, 347)
For records cataloged according to RDA, use all fields that apply, but do not repeat fields that would be exactly identical. For fields that do not apply to the entire set, use subfield 3 to indicate which piece of the set is being described. None of these fields get final punctuation.
The following are examples of what the fields can look like; the actual content of each field can (and probably will) differ from record to record.

Cataloging combo discs separately

Be careful about the coding of the following fields when cataloging discs separately that were purchased as part of a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack.

007
Be sure to omit any 007 fields for the other format(s)
ISBN (020)
When there is an ISBN for the set, code that as ‡a rather than ‡z, just as you would do for books. That will allow cover art to display in the online catalog for these items.
Other standard identifier (024)
Because it applies to the set rather than the individual disc, code a UPC, EAN, or other such standard number for the combo pack in ‡a, and qualify it with ‡q. That will allow cover art to display in the online catalog for these items in cases when there is no ISBN or no image for the ISBN.
024 1_ ‡a043396397699‡q(set)
Publisher number (028)
Add a qualifier of "(set)" in ‡q to a publisher number for the combo pack as a whole.
028 42 39769‡bSony Pictures Home Entertainment‡q(set)
If the identical disc was also issued separately, such that a single record may be used for both the standalone disc and the disc from the combo pack, add a qualifier of "(Blu-ray alone)" or "(DVD alone)" as appropriate
028 42 39770‡bSony Pictures Home Entertainment‡q(Blu-ray alone)
Language (041 and 546)
If the spoken languages or subtitle languages vary between the formats, make sure that you only describe the languages for the format in hand.
Edition (250)
Add a bracketed edition statement describing the format, in order to make it more clear which record is for which format, and also make it less likely that OCLC will mistakenly merge a record for a combo pack onto a record for just one format or the other.
250 [Blu-ray-only version].
Physical description (300)
Be sure to omit any mention of the discs for the other format(s) from the description.
System details note {538}
Be sure to omit any mention of the other format(s).
General note (500)
Add a note describing the relation of this format to the original pack.
500 Issued as part of a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack.
If the identical disc was also issued separately, such that a single record may be used for both the standalone disc and the disc from the combo pack, change the wording to allow for both circumstances.
500 Also issued as part of a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack.
Bonus features
If any bonus features vary between the formats in a combo pack, make sure that you only describe the bonus features for the format in hand.

Accompanying material

When accompanying material that is not just of a promotional nature and is not simply a digital copy is included with a combo pack that is being split up (such as a music CD, a separate "bonus materials" DVD, or a book), add the note:

500 Accompanying material may vary.

to the catalog record to which you are attaching your item.

Blu-ray + DVD dual-sided discs

If the item has Blu-ray coding on one side of the disc and DVD coding on the other side of the disc, always use "videodisc" for the SMD in the 300 field (e.g. "1 videodisc" when there is only one disc in the package), even when Blu-ray is considered the predominant format.

If the sides are enumerated (e.g. "Side A", "Side B"), treat whichever is Side A as the predominant format.

Include a note explaining the dual format. (This note text is a sample wording, not the only acceptable wording.)

500 Videodisc recorded on both sides; one side Blu-ray, one side DVD.

Include an 007 field for the Blu-ray format and another one for the DVD format.

Include separate 538 fields for each format.

Otherwise, select which of the formats is predominant and catalog the item accordingly.
