Call number analytic

A call number analytic is a piece of a call number that refers to a specific part of the item described by the catalog record. This includes individual volumes, parts, issues, and so forth. This can also include different versions that are cataloged on the same record, such as testing books produced with and without an accompanying CD-ROM.

This piece of the call number is referred to as an "analytic" because it is related to the concept of analysis, as defined by AACR2R 13.1A.

In WorkFlows, call number analytics are entered in subfield z (|z) of the call number field of the call number record. They are used when placing and filling holds to specify which volume/part the patron wants, and thus must be consistent across the entire consortium.

See Multivolume call numbers and Call number analytics for periodicals for the local rules on how to construct and enter call number analtyics.
