When a serial or other continuing resource ceases publication or when you create a new record due to a change, close off the old record. The extent to which each element is completed depends on the issues that are in hand and the information that is available (see the chart in the CONSER Cataloging Manual, Module 16, page 20 as well as Module 21.3).

  1. Change the Publication Status (DtSt) in the fixed field from c to d.
  2. Add the ending date to both the Dates fixed field element and the 260 ‡c.
  3. Specify the total number of volumes in 300 ‡a.
  4. Add the last issue information to the 362 field.
  5. Add the ending date to any date ranges in other fields (general notes, 246 ‡f, etc.)
  6. When there is a title change rather than an outright cessation of publication, add a 785 uniform title succeeding entry in subfield t, not subfield a. Do not transcribe initial articles.
  7. Remove your library's 599 field (latest issue received), if one is present. (Look for the field with the policy number listed for your library on the Library codes page.)
