When a serial or other continuing resource ceases publication or when you create a new record due to a change, close off the old record. The extent to which each element is completed depends on the issues that are in hand and the information that is available (see the chart in the CONSER Cataloging Manual, Module 16, page 20 as well as Module 21.3).

  1. Change the Publication Status in the fixed field from c to d.
  2. Add the date publication ceased in Date 2 in the fixed field, and 264 ‡c.
  3. If known, specify the total number of volumes in 300 ‡a.
  4. Add the last issue information to the 362 field.
  5. Optionally, add the ending date to any date ranges in other fields (general notes, 246 ‡f, etc.)
  6. If the title has changed, add a 785 field with the succeeding title in subfield t; do not transcribe initial articles.
