Contents notes are optional for works with more than 100 titles. You are encouraged to enhance contents notes.

Contents notes are required for the following
  • Short stories
  • Plays
  • Literary collections (two or more forms of literature)
  • Fairy tales
  • Songs
  • Supreme Court cases
  • Collective biographies
Contents notes are not required for the following
  • Poetry
  • Speeches (EXCEPTION: Representative American Speeches)
  • Essays (EXCEPTION: Best American Essays)
  • Excerpts
  • Complete works
  • Myths
  • Fake-books
  • Encyclopedic reference works
  • Miscellaneous writings— quotations, letters, anecdotes
  • Chapter headings
