Publishers frequently acquire other publishers, change their names, have subsidiaries in this and other countries, purchase the rights to produce another publisher's titles in other bindings, have paperback divisions, and sell printing rights to multiple reprint and remainder publishers simultaneously. Such situations have made the matter of distinctly named publishers constituting distinct items too complicated and often too trivial to matter in the issue of creating new entries.

If it can be ascertained that two versions of a book are essentially the same in content but differ in publisher, do not create an additional record. Prefer one record with a note providing information about the other publisher. Add a note about any foreign publisher, reprint or other publisher.

Examples:
Published simultaneously by Crown Books and Bonanza Books.
Also published in Britain by Octopus Books.
Also published by Crescent Books and Chartwell Books.
