Software tools
Use the free-floating form subdivision --Software only for items that are software tools for accomplishing a specific task. Do not use the subdivision --Interactive multimedia.
Examples
Quicken 2003 Deluxe (OCLC #51022137) is a software tool for accounting and personal finance management. Assign:
650 _0 Finance, Personal|vSoftware. 650 _0 Small business|xFinance|vSoftware.
Family Tree Maker (OCLC #50813096) is a software tool for creating genealogy charts. Assign:
650 _0 Genealogy|vSoftware.
Topical items
For items that are topical in nature or are reference works, do not assign the subdivision —Software. Assign only the appropriate topical subject headings without form subdivisions.
Examples
Multimedia Exotic Pets (OCLC #34713830) is a topical work, on CD-ROM, about choosing and owning pets. Assign:
650 _0 Pets.
The Civil War (OCLC #42857846) is a reference work on CD-ROM, about the American Civil War. Assign:
651 _0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865. 651 _0 United States|xHistory|yCivil War, 1861-1865|vSources.
The form heading Electronic encyclopedias is assigned only to general encyclopedias. Topical encyclopedias are assigned the appropriate topical heading with the subdivision --Encyclopedias.

Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Deluxe 2002 (OCLC #49264814) is a general encyclopedia on CD-ROM. Assign:
650 _0 Electronic encyclopedias.
Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Science (OCLC #33470788) is a topical encyclopedia on CD-ROM. Assign:
650 _0 Science|vEncyclopedias. 650 _0 Technology|vEncyclopedias.
Juvenile materials
When cataloging electronic resources specifically intended for use by children, assign the free-floating form subdivision --Juvenile software in the same manner that you would assign other juvenile form subdivisions, e.g. --Juvenile literature, --Juvenile films, etc. Do not use the subdivision --Juvenile interactive multimedia.
Example
Birds (OCLC #36411409) is a topical work for children on CD-ROM. Assign:
650 _0 Birds|vJuvenile software. 650 _0 Birdsongs|vJuvenile software.
If Annotated Card Program headings are assigned to electronic resources, or if you add them for our database, do not assign the form subdivision --Software or any other form subdivision. If AC headings are assigned to topical (non-fiction) works for children, also assign an LC heading with the appropriate juvenile form subdivision.
Example
Amazing Animals (OCLC #37019288) is a topical work for children on CD-ROM. Assign:
650 _0 Animals|vJuvenile software.
650 _1 Animals.
Computer games
The free-floating form subdivision —Computer games is available for use with topical subject headings for computer software games with specific themes.
Example
Harpoon Classic 97 (OCLC #38279471) is a computer game of modern naval warfare. Assign:
650 _0 Naval strategy|vComputer games. 650 _0 Naval tactics|vComputer games.
The headings Computer games, Computer adventure games, Computer war games, etc. have not been formally designated as form headings. However, you may assign the headings as form headings, when applicable. Assign Computer games only when no other more specific heading is available. Assign these as LC headings, not as AC headings.

The form heading for eBooks is:
655 _0 Electronic books.
The form headings for eAudiobooks are:
655 _0 Electronic books. 655 _0 Audiobooks.
The form heading for eVideos is:
