Generic records are brief records permitted by CCS for items that do not require bibliographic access. Each library may make its own decision regarding the use of generic records. Examples include book bags, puppets, pamphlets, etc.

Any item for which the library DOES want full bibliographic access (by title, author, ISBN, LCCN, etc.) must be entered in full MARC format.

Any generic record, by definition, is not for the purpose of providing bibliographic access and therefore should be shadowed from the online public access catalog. This can be done by checking the Shadow title box on the upper left-hand corner of the bibliographic record, and/or by selecting a home location or item type that is shadowed.

The following MARC fields are required for Generic Records:

Variable fields

245 00 Title
Subfield a is mandatory. Enter a descriptive title here. As part of the title, identify your library, so that it is possible for staff to find your records in a hit list.
Examples:
Algonquin book bag
Winnetka vertical file material.
945 Local
Should be ‡b OCLC DO NOT SET so that the record will be ignored for automatically setting OCLC holdings.

Fixed fields

Rec_Type: x
Bib_Lvl: x
Enc_Lvl: X

Information in other fields can be supplied if available, but is not required.
