Generic records are brief catalog records in Workflows for items that do not require full bibliographic access. Each library makes its own decision regarding the use of generic records. Examples include book bags, puppets, pamphlets, etc. OCLC records are not required in the catalog for these items. For material that needs bibliographic access but is of local interest, see the guidelines for unique local material.

Generic records should be shadowed from the public catalog. This can be done by checking the Shadow title box on the upper left-hand corner of the bibliographic record, and/or by selecting a home location or item type that is shadowed.

The following MARC fields are required for generic records:

Title control number

It is easy to locate all of a library's generic records if you follow the naming convention of lower case x followed by the library's 3-letter K/Q code, then a unique identifier. You can rename control numbers that begin with an "a".
xPHKBOOKBAG, xLNKPUZZ
