Guidelines for Literary Form in Polaris

The Literary Form facet in PowerPAC is populated by the Literary Form fixed field in a bibliographic record. The Database Management Committee reviewed recommendations from both the PAS and Technical Services Advisory groups.[1]

  • For print materials only, libraries will assign at minimum a literary form of either 0 (Not fiction) or 1 (Fiction).
  • Libraries can use more specific values (Short Stories, Poetry, etc.) if desired.
  • It is required that novels should be coded as 1 (Fiction) instead of f (Novels).
