Major differences: Create a new record Minor differences: Use an existing record
Title, subtitle, or parallel title A difference in title on the chief source of information A difference in title on extraneous material, such as container or disc surface
Statement of responsibility A difference in director, producer, writer or other such responsible person A difference in the form of such person’s names
Edition A difference in the formatting, such as widescreen, full screen, or widescreen & full screen
A difference in the edition or version that indicates a difference in content, such as director's cut, or unrated version A difference in the edition or version that does not indicate a difference in content or when the edition/version statement is the only difference between items, such as 25th anniversary edition or (especially for Warner Bros. videorecordings) Rental[1]
Place of Publication   A difference in the place of production or distribution
Publisher   A difference in the producer or distributor
Dates   A difference in the distribution date, if there is no indication that it represents a difference in content
A difference in the copyright date on the packaging or disc, if there is no indication that it represents a difference in content
Number of parts for the video content A difference in the number of DVDs, videocassettes, etc. used for the feature presentation or any extra features A difference in the number of DVDs, videocassettes, etc. caused by an additional part that is only promotional or advertising in nature
A difference in the number of sides, such as single-sided disc vs. double-sided disc
Running Time A difference of more than 3 minutes in the running time of the feature presentation that is not obviously caused by rounding[2] A difference of 3 minutes or less in the running time of the feature presentation, or a difference of more than 3 minutes that is obviously caused by rounding[2]
A difference in the running time of extras or bonus features that does not represent a significant difference in content
difference in the running time where one is the running time of the feature presentation and the other is the running time of the feature plus all extra features[3]
Color Black & white vs. color
Sound A difference in the available sound channels, such as mono. vs. stereo. or mono. vs. surround sound A difference between two types of stereo or surround sound, such as 2.0 stereo, 5.1 stereo surround, 7.1 stereo surround, THX, or DTS
Dimensions A difference in the dimensions, such as ¾ in. tape vs. ½ in. tape, or 4 ¾ in. disc vs. 2 ½ in. disc
Series   A difference, addition or removal of a series statement
Content & Accompanying material A difference in accompanying material that is integral to the intended use of the item such as the presence of DVD-ROM content A difference in accompanying material that is not an integral part of the item's intended use, such as promotional or advertising material, including an entire added disc or booklet of promotional material
A difference in significant accompanying material that is not promotional or advertising, such as special or "bonus" features A difference in the available previews or trailers for other movies
Participant or performers A difference in cast members, narrators, etc.
Languages A difference in the dubbed languages or languages of available audio tracks, including sound vs. silent
A difference in the languages of available subtitles
Captioning The presence or absence of closed captions (CC), signed for the deaf and hard of hearing, subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH), or descriptions for the visually impaired (DVS)
System Requirements A difference in the medium, such as DVD, Videocassette, Blu-ray, etc.
A difference in region encoding, such as Region 1, Region 2, Region 0, or all regions[4] A difference of only Region 1 vs. no listed region, or Region 0 vs. Region 1[4]
Aspect ratio A difference in the aspect ratio, such as 2.13:1 or 1.85:1
Packaging & Data storage A difference in the data storage, such as single layer or dual layer A difference of specified data storage vs. no storage type specified, such as single layer vs. no mention of layers
A difference in the type of packaging, such as cardboard vs. a vinyl case
Remastering   A difference regarding mastering, such as remastering the sound or recoloring a color film
Standard Number   A difference in ISBN, UPC, label number, publisher number or other such standard numbers

  2. a b For example, "About 120 min." vs. "116 min." is a minor difference; "120 min." vs. "116 min" is a major difference.
  3. For example, "120 min." vs. "150 min." is a minor difference for a 120 minute movie with 30 minutes of extras.
