When to use existing records

When cataloging material that is new to the database, use the When to create a new record guidelines to determine whether to attach your item to an existing record or to create a new record.

If there are multiple existing records to which your new item could be attached, or when examining existing records in the database for any other reason, use the When to merge existing records and Series vs. set guidelines to determine whether to split up single records, continue using separate records, or merge separate records into a single record.
