CCS libraries optionally may include awards information in the 586 field.  This note provides information about an award that is associated with an item.  This awards note becomes another access point to the bibliographic record.<ref name="use_of_field_586">Seward, Virginia. The decision of which awards to cite is up to the discretion of the individual library. The most important awards to include in a bibliographic record fall into two different categories:

* Book Awards (Pulitzer Prizes, National Books Awards, Caldecott Medals, and etc.), and
These well-known awards are recommended. Others may be added at the cataloger's discretion.
* Entertainment Awards (Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, and etc.)
