Add Awards notes in the MARC 586 field as directed in Bibliographic Formats and Standards. This awards note becomes another access point to the bibliographic record.[1]
The most important awards to include in the bibliographic record fall into two different categories:
- Book awards
- Entertainment awards
Only well-known awards are recommended for this field:

Libraries are encouraged to add this note when an award winner is announced if it is not already in the bibliographic record.
To save time and space, only the most important awards under each category should be cited. record. Cite only award winners, not nominees who did not win.[1]
Book awards
Caldecott Medal
Add note for the winner for Best Picture Book and for the Honor book titles.[1]

Monarch Award
Add note for the winners of this children's books award.[1]

National Book Award
Add note for titles given awards in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.[1]

Newbery Medal
Add note for the winner for Best Book and for the Honor book titles.[1]

Pulitzer Prize
Add note for titles awarded Prizes in Letters for fiction, nonfiction, drama, biography, and poetry.[1]

Rebecca Caudill Award
Add note for the winners of this children's books award.[1]

Entertainment awards
Academy Award
Add note for movies awarded Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Foreign-Language Film, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Documentary Film (Feature), and Best Documentary Film (Short Subject) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[1]

- Do not use the phrase "Oscar winner." Oscar is the name of the statuette and not the award
- For films winning multiple Academy Awards, only cite the awards mentioned above. When a movie wins for two or more in those categories, then include them both in one note.

Emmy Award
Add note for television shows awarded Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.[1]

- Many TV shows receive awards for Best Drama series or Best Comedy series for a number of years. This also can be cited in one note:

Grammy Award
Add note for sound recordings awarded Best Record and Best Album.[1]

Tony Award
