CCS is committed to improving access to children's materials. The following guidelines are provided to assist catalogers in making consistent decisions when cataloging children's materials. The guidelines are not meant to be all-inclusive. They only touch on areas that need clarification.

Definition

The term children's materials includes all materials deemed intellectually suitable for use by children through the junior high level. Do not apply these guidelines to adult or young adult level materials placed in the children's collection. Do apply these guidelines to children's materials placed in the adult collection. Children's materials are designated by using the fixed field Audn. Juvenile works can be coded using the general code j or a specific code (a, b, or c).

Goal

The goal of cataloging children's materials is to provide quick and easy access to children's materials for both children and adults by enhancing all bibliographic records with helpful access points and informative data that are consistent with Library of Congress standards and CCS policies.
