A storage card is a type of digital media storage device that can contain a recording of an audiobook, music, or images. The storage cards are inserted into a device that plays the specific brand of storage card. These cards appear differently depending on the brand. The Yoto Player and Yoto Mini play cards that are the size of credit cards. The storage card for Toniebox and Toniebox 2 are within figurines or characters called Tonies. The Story Dream Machine has a cartridge that looks like a book and a character that is plugged into the top to create lighting effects. In addition to the audio component, Story Dream Machines also project the image of a page of a book on to the wall, like a slide projector.

Libraries can circulate the cards and players together as a kit or circulate the cards on their own. CCS libraries have the option to create records for these items by following the Library of Things practices for local materials. If a library chooses to use an OCLC record and allow other libraries to use that record, the guidelines on this page and OLAC’s Best Practices for Digital Media Storage Devices should be followed. Examples of records for the Toniebox and Yoto Player are in the OLAC document. Currently, there is no guidance from OLAC on cataloging Story Dream Machines. Please follow the guidance on this page for OCLC records.
